Hello! I’m Jane.

Before I became a product designer, I spent 9 years as a math teacher.

As a math teacher, I collaborated with other teachers to identify patterns in student solution methods and mistakes, and iterated on my lessons based on what I learned about my students each year. No two years were alike. I also spoke at local and national teaching conventions on methods for making the math classroom more equitable for all students.

Design entered my scene 6 years ago.

I volunteered to take on the yearbook journalism class. I taught student journalists how to create and maintain a design system. I learned to coach students in layout design, interviewing, time management, and how to give constructive feedback without making people cry. Our book grew in both size and sales all 5 years, and my last yearbook earned an All-American rating by the National Scholastic Press Association.

Why product design?

Product design combines my favorite aspects of being a math teacher and a yearbook adviser. User research and user flows resemble getting to know my students as learners and lesson planning for multiple solution methods. UI design mirrors the purposeful decision-making in designing (not decorating) a yearbook.

Moving forward, I want to create intuitive digital experiences that give users confidence and delight.

What am I learning lately?

There are two leafy plants on a table. In front of the plants are a watering can and a framed picture of Van Gogh's Sunflowers.
